Ada Fay Stephenson, a life long resident of Vinita died Tuesday, May 9, 2006. She was 94 years of age. Fay was born April 29, 1912 in Vinita, OK. She graduated from Vinita High School in 1929 then later graduated from Northeastern Oklahoma Junior College in Miami, OK in 1931. She was a member of the Sigma IOTA Chi Sorority. She received a five year teaching certificate from the state of Oklahoma. Upon graduation she taught at willow Branch School. She was a member of the Home Demonstration Club of Vinita. She served as a 4-H Club leader in the Dupree School District. She also served as a substitute teacher for the 1st and 4th grades, Junior High and High School. She was a member of the First Methodist Church, and the women's "Circle" group. She was a charter member of the "Scissorettes" a sewing circle and social group which was organized for young mothers. It began with twelve members for the Vinita area in 1935 and continued until 2000. She participated in the initial efforts to establish a "meals for elders" program similar to today's meals on wheels program. She served as President of Church Women United, and was a Representative Delegate from the church for a Jurisdictional conference. She served as First United Church historian from 1980-2002. She was a charter member of the "Vinnie Ream Cultural Center." She was possibly one of the oldest members of First United Methodist Church who continued to occasionally attend functions at the church. Mrs. Stephenson was renowned for her remarkable ability to remember family history, and history of the Vinita area. Fay was a member of the Cherokee Nation. She was preceded in death by her husband Harry B. Stephenson, and her parents Alvin and Ada (Donnelly) Meek. Fay was the mother of three children. She is survived by her daughter Annette Cearley of Cushing, OK and sons James and his wife Sylvia Stephenson of Tulsa, and David and his wife Yannah of Broken Arrow, OK; eleven grandchildren: Kay Jones, Kevin Cearley, James Lee Stephenson, Keith Stephenson, Phillip Stephenson, Chris Stephenson, Sue Chapman, Tari BigPond, Mike Stephenson, Stephannie Johnson, and A'ndrea Hornig., ten great-grandchildren Shanaia Jones, Martin Jones, Amber Stephenson, John Stephenson, Sam Chapman, Nicole Stephenson, Adam Stephenson, Kathrin Stephenson, Nichole Stephenson, Drayke Hornig, and one great grandchild Ethan Rainwater. Funeral services for Mrs. Stephenson will be 2:00 PM on Friday, May 12, 2006 at the Luginbuel Funeral Home in Vinita, OK with Reverend Bob Johns officiating. Interment will follow in the Fairview Cemetery under the direction of the Luginbuel Funeral Home in Vinita. Visitation will be on Thursday, May 11, 2006 from 6:30 to 7:30 PM at the Funeral Homes Chapel. Casketbearers will be Mike Stephenson, Phil Stephenson, Kevin Cearley, Keith Stephenson, Chris Stephenson, and Brad Rider.
