Alice Thompson

April 17, 1930 — October 13, 2021

Mrs. Alice Kathryn (Chapman) Thompson, age 91 of Dewey, Oklahoma passed peacefully Wednesday, October 13, 2021, in her home surrounded by family.

Mrs. Thompson or Mama, Alice, or Grandma T, who she was commonly referred to, was born to Vernon and Nona Chapman in Reese, Kansas April 17, 1930.  She attended Reece Schools graduating with the class of 1948 and attended Emporia State University where she earned her teaching certificate.  Alice taught at Ivanpah School, a one room schoolhouse in Greenwood County, Kansas.  After meeting George Thompson, Alice moved to Bartlesville, Oklahoma and worked as a secretary for Cities Service Company in their tax department.

Alice and George were united in marriage June 16, 1951 in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, receiving the Sacrament of Marriage afterward.  They established their home in Dewey and Alice become a devoted housewife and 24 hour mama to eight children and later grandma to twenty-eight grandchildren and an ongoing third generation of loving great grandchildren.  Alice and George were married 48 years until 1999, when George passed away.

As a faithful and devout Catholic, Alice served many roles as a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.  These include President of Altar Society, Sacristan, and CCD teacher for many years. She received the ‘Woman of Achievement’ award from the Tulsa Diocesan of Catholic Women in 2013.  Alice embodied a Christ like service to all who crossed her path, and her love was evident for anyone lucky enough to have met her.

Outside of caring for her family Alice had many interests and hobbies. She and George enjoyed camping with their kids and grandkids. She also loved baking and decorating cakes including her seven daughter’s wedding cakes.  Alice always enjoyed life and stayed active by taking piano lessons, bowling or challenging any of us to a good game of dice, cards or Scrabble.  Grandma T will most be remembered by her family as the one true constant in their lives. No matter the activity, if her children and grandchildren were involved she was there.  Her dedication and love towards her family and the Lord served as a foundation for all of us.

The Vigil Rosary for Alice will be held Monday evening October 18 at 7:00pm in the sanctuary of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Dewey.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated October 19 at 10:30am at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Dewey with Rev. Msgr. Gregory Gier as celebrant and Father Leonard Higgins as co-celebrant.  The Rite of Committal and burial will be accorded Alice on the family plot in Memorial Park Cemetery in Bartlesville under the direction of Arnold Moore & Neekamp Funeral Home.

In addition to her husband George, Alice was preceded in death by her granddaughter Kathryn Celia Sparkman.  Her eight surviving children are:  George Thompson III, Scottsdale AZ; Gayle (Mrs. Clint Nash), Otis, CO; Mary (Mrs. Ray Vargas), Dewey, OK; Karen (Mrs. Craig Bilodeau), Oklahoma City, OK; Theresia (Mrs. Burr Gagan) Lenapah, OK; Barbara (Mrs. Tom Miller), Copan, OK; Linda (Mrs. Brian Friess), Lyons, KS; and Donna (Mrs. Mike Watson), Bartlesville, OK; 27 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and 1 on the way.
